Bank Holiday Monday

We usually avoid going anywhere on a Bank Holiday as it is usually really really busy, so why bother. Instead we did our own thing at home, I have managed to catch up on some blogging and a few bits and bobs around the house, Jamie is having fun on his XBox - he is trying to complete his Indiana Jones game and is at about 92% (he is into his Indiana Jones at the moment) and Mike is Aylesbury Friaring, so that is not a bad Bank Holiday and its away from any crowds.

Sunday 30th August - Catching Up With Some TV

Just a usual day today, but I did manage to catch up with some television, along with Jamie, we caught up with a couple of our fav shows, including Spooks and Without a Trace. I do love the sky+ box because it makes recording shows so easy and then its so easy to see what you have got to watch too. I think we need another session to catch up with everything, but a nice restful day again.

Aylesbury Friars

Just to say I am finally catching up with the 4 or 5 posts which I had left incomplete from April and May. There is an introduction to Aylesbury Friars which can be found at http://suesfamilyflowersandfunstuff.blogspot.com/2009/04/friars-aylesbury.html. The other outstanding posts including a review of a John Barrowman gig will follow in the next few days, all going well (now up at 16th May) - I've got about 4 to catch up on to be complete yipee!

Saturday 29th August

A bit of relaxation today, just hanging about the house and not worrying about too much. Sadly today is the end of Mike's holidays and he has to head out to work on night shift tonight, at least he only has a couple of nights and then is off for a few more days. Jamie has been out playing with his friends, but as Mike has been asleep ready for tonight, he has been given strict instructions that today he can't have anyone in to play as Daddy can't be disturbed - but the weather is fine, so he can get some fresh air, always good for him!

A quiet day - I think it's needed.

Friday 28th August - I'm Finished and Then We Celebrate!

This morning I finished my PTLLS work and made sure the portfolio was complete, with all the forms filled in and everything in its proper place. I dropped it off this afternoon and one of the tutors checked though it and that is it, finished. It seems like I've been doing this for ages, and normally the course runs over 16 weeks, or 1 1/2 terms but the intensive is 33 days from start to finish. There is a chance that it will be externally assessed in early September, so with a bit of luck I should know how I have done by then, fingers crossed.

What am I going to do with myself now? Housework to start with!! Well tonight a few of us from the course are going out see a pub band in Whaddon, one of the guys on the course goes to see them regularly and he says its good fun, so why not - a well earned bit of relaxation for all involved I would say.

Second Place at Bucks County Show Flower Arranging Competition/PTLLS Almost Finished!!

My alarm rang at 5 am this morning, I dragged myself out of bed (I am not an early riser!) and threw on some clothes, grabbed a cup of tea, got my bits together and headed out by 5.30, I was aiming to be at the show ground as near 6 as I could, I had until 8am to finish off my arrangement. I got there in good time, headed in and continued from the night before. I finished the hot side of my arrangement and started on the cool. I finished off and checked the other arrangements and left. It then took me over 20 minutes to find my way off the site, let me out of here - I thought I was going to be stuck in there.

I headed home via McDonalds where I treated us to a MacD breakfast which was a very welcome on my part. I then headed off to do a little bit more on my portfolio where I completed the assignment section. We decided we would head off to the show at about 1.00pm, judging was due to take place between 8 and 10 am, so when we got there we would be able to find out if I had won anything. The traffic when we got about 2 miles from the ground was horrendous and the last two miles took over an hour!

The Home and Garden Tent (picture zanypurr)

When we eventually got parked we headed to the Home and Garden tent to see how I had done. I had to a Second place for my Hogarth Curve and a Highly Commended for my with wood arrangement. Wow, it was my first competition and I had no idea what to expect so I was really pleased. The winners were very 'traditional' dare I even say old fashioned which made me think the judge was very into that traditional style of arrangement. My philosophy on this at the moment is I am just learning and I want to develop my own style and see where that takes me, learning as much as I can as I go.

We then had a wander around the show, there were some amazing flowers and HUGE vegetables in the home and garden tent. We saw some of the dogs very cute beagles, bassets and some others and a demonstration of hearing dogs. We wandered around most of the tents, had a bite to eat, although there wasn't much left and we felt that because of the captive nature of the audience it was a tad expensive. But we had a lovely ice-cream and I had a caramel one which was delicious, not my usual choice of flavour, but one I will have again.
Here are my certificates .....

We moved the car and then at 5.15 I collected my bits put them in the car and we came home to celebrate!! I was pretty pleased and look forward to having another go next year.

I put a couple of arrangements from the trellis in the bay window.

I think the pressure of it all is getting to Jamie .....

My winnings - I had promised Jamie he could have any winnings, if I got anything, so he was a happy bunny .....

Here he is showing off his 'tattoo', the Metallica obsession continues .....

and here it is in close-up, James would be proud!

Almost Finished the PTLLS/Bucks County Show - Flower Arranging Competition

Very little else is going on for me at the moment other than making sure my course work is completed. Mike is on leave from work so he is pottering about doing his thing and keeping us fed, as I just keep forgetting! Jamie is busy playing with his friends, either at the park, downstairs or at their houses, so everyone is happy. Mike has been brilliant and done most of the washing and ironing, allowing me to concentrate but I know when Jamie gets back to school I am going to have to have a big tidy up - so it's tidy my way!

My portfolio is almost complete, I have 3 sections to complete which are the learning journals, a reflective process looking at why, how, what, when. What did I do, how did I do it, why did I do it that way, could it be improved, what worked well, what didn't work well, did I understand, what did I understand etc etc. The daily journals I have completed each day of the course so I now just need to put them into a summary format, which should be pretty simple. I have also done some journals for the theory assignments (but not for all of them) I need to write the journals and then put them into a summary document, and then the same for the practical assignments. Today I have completed the daily journals and have started working on the assignment section, I hope to finish them Thursday as I was just too tired to finish them on Wednesday.

I was too tired because in the afternoon, I got all of my kit ready, my flowers and all of the other bits I need and headed off to Aylesbury. We stopped at Mike's Mum's to leave Jamie, raid her garden of some extra bits of foliage and then Mike took me to Weedon Park, just outside Aylesbury where the Bucks County Show is being held.

Years ago I used to go to Stokesley Show in North Yorkshire, which as a child I loved. My Mum had lots of relatives in Stokesley (it's where my Grandmother's family were from) and we always went to the agricultural show, went to the fair and visited one of my Mum's Aunt and Uncles (who were very very old then) and then one of my Mum's cousins (Uncle Laurie) for tea and we had a lovely day. It also has 'fond' memories for Mike and I too, as it was one of the first places I took him in the North East and it was the first time he met my brother John and his family! It was also the place where he ate something dodgy and became incredibly ill later, it was either mini doughnuts or a roast pork sandwich! As I said at the time, Soft Southern Shandy Drinker, couldn't cope with the North!!!!!

So I wasn't sure what to expect at Bucks CS, would it be as big as Stokesley. When we pulled onto the field, we both realised it was pretty big and there was a lot going on. We got directions to the Home and Garden tent and headed over. I went in and sussed out what was going on, lots of flowers, vegetables, cakes, handicrafts etc. There were some flower arrangers already there so I worked out where I needed to be. Mike helped me unload my stuff and I set up on one of the tables near one of the spaces for one of my arrangements. I now wish I'd taken a couple of photos to get the atmosphere of the event, but I wanted to get on with my arrangements and didn't. Mike headed back to his Mum's for the evening and dinner!

Mike had made a lovely flask of coffee for me to take with me, which later was to become a great boon. I got chatting to the lady at the table next to me who was very nice and we chatted away and worked away for the next couple of hours, stopping when I'd completed my first arrangement for a coffee. As I had two mugs I shared the coffee with her and it was very welcome to both of us!

I decided to tackle the most technically difficult arrangement first and get that one out of the way, it was in the class Elegance in a Candlestick. I decided to be very traditional and do a Hogarth Curve using deep purple calla lillies. I was very pleased with how this arrangement worked and the calla lillies bent perfectly for me. I used a huge chrysanthemum as my focal flower and was pleased with the whole arrangement. I had used a clear glass candlestick and dressed the table with some black voile and white tulle and it set the arrangement off to perfection. I also added in some lisianthus and purple/red foliage to match the colour scheme. I was very pleased with it and so felt I deserved a coffee! Below is the arrangement.

The next arrangement was one in a basket, for the Arrangement in a Basket category. I had got a huge basket and thought I would go for a very strong colour scheme (red and gold) and use some medilano sticks for some added interest and to give it a more modern feel. I was also trying to emulate some of the table arrangements I had seen at the Coventry NAFAS show. So this arrangement I was picturing on coffee table. It was a straightforward all round arrangement with gold chrysanthemums and roses, red carnations and aster, lots of foliage and some gypsophilia. a bit of weaving and some beads I achieved what I wanted with the arrangement.

I left my largest arrangement to the end which was in the An Arrangement with Wood category, and this was a biggie. My neighbour had made me a pair of stands out of a piece of trellis I bought and they are a great asset to my arranging and I will get plenty of use out of them. But I was aiming for a impression of a trellis between two neighbouring gardens , sort looking through my neighbours fence as my working title in my head. There was a lot of work in it as I had to work out how to attach the oasis, which I worked out as I was going along (lots of double sided tape), get the ivy to stay on the top and sides and then make two very large arrangements at the bottom. On one side I went for hot, on the other cool.

Here is the hot side .....

I managed to complete the hot side before the light in the tent got the better of me. Everyone else had gone, there were other people about on the show ground, but the tent felt very empty. It was also very hard to work in the light as they were not the brightest and I was struggling to see, so about 9.30 I gave Mike and shout to come and collect me as I had done as much as I could and I was tired. I'd been there for over 3 and a half hours I felt I would do better in the morning when I had more light to play with. So Mike and Jamie collected me and a very tired me headed home, wondering what tomorrow would bring.

When I got home I got together what I was planning to take the next morning had a bite to eat and went to bed as I knew I had an early start the next day!

More Course Work and Buying Flowers (Tuesday 25th August)

Today was more getting course work sorted out and completed. I've now completed the Summative Profile and tidied up some other bits for the learning journal section which I will complete tomorrow hopefully.

This afternoon it was something much more fun as I headed off to the flower wholesalers I use just the other side of Woburn Safari Park, near Eversholt in Bedforshire. I took Jamie as he hadn't been before. It is one of those places that if you are a flower arranger it is heaven on earth there is so much stuff you just want to have it all, and everything you see you think, I could use that, I could use that, and that and that. So I have to be very disciplined with myself. I had a shopping list, as I was going with a purpose, although I did spot a couple of things which will be going onto a future shopping list!

I wanted to get some sundries and some flowers as I am entering the Bucks County Show flower arranging classes on Thursday so I wanted to get my flowers and get them conditioned (let them have a really good drink) so they will be ready to work with. I ended up spending a small fortune but at this stage I don't really know how much of everything I am going to need. I tried not to have everything I was doing set in stone, as I may not be able to get the flowers or foliage that I am after, so would make final choices once I had seen what was available. Luckily I managed to get just about everything I was after either at Hillyards or at Frosts Garden Centre at Woburn Sands. But as a taster some of the flowers I am using are chrysanthemums, roses, calla lilies, phlox, carnations, asters and even a petunia or two out of the garden.

Here are some pictures of some of the things I bought, some for Thursday and some for general use. For pictures of the flowers you will have to wait and see the completed designs and see how I do on Thursday (fingers crossed). I started flower arranging less than a year ago and here I am on the eve of entering my first competition, it is so exciting!

One of the classes for the Bucks County Show is an arrangement in a basket, I bought this one as I thought I may use it, but decided on a different one I bought today instead, but this will come in very handy too, also in this picture is the biggest ball of string (ever!) which cost me less than a small one would at Hobbycraft, and I suspect I will use it up (eventually!) and a small bag of feathers, which may or may not get used on Thursday.

I totally fell in love with this basket, and it was only £1.75 I have an idea to do a rustic continental or parallel arrangement in this, it should work well.

Finally a kenzan or pin holder (85p a snip!) used for Ikebana, some copper coloured wire, feathers, candle holder and some blacks beads on wire.

Back to My Course Work

Not too much to say today, I have now completed all of the theory assignments for my PTLLS course, and dropped them off today, hooray! I have totally enjoyed doing them and feel pretty pleased with what I have achieved and how they have gone, clearly working steadily through the course is always the best way to go, rather than leaving it to the last minute! So I have a couple of other bits to finish and fingers crossed everything I have put in so far is ok.

Kajagoogoo at Hobble on the Cobbles

Aylesbury Market Square

I got on with a little bit more course work this morning, Jamie was playing out with his friends and Mike was doing his thing too. Later on we went to Mike's Mums for Sunday lunch and then headed out to the Hobble on the Cobbles. The main act was Kajagoogoo (it really is a year for seeing all the 80's bands). We managed to grab a quick hello with Stuart one of the organisers and a Friars mate of Mike's and with Rick and Judy. We decided to have a drink at the Kings Head which was heaving and then wander back to the main square to watch Kaja.

Here are one or two pictures of the guys in action, above Nick Beggs with an unusual looking bass (Note - apparently it is a Chapman Stick a cross between a bass and a guitar played by Nick Beggs and most prominently Tony Levin from Peter Gabriel's band) and you can just make out that he is wearing his man-skirt. Below is Limahl looking pretty much as he did in the 80's. It was good fun, nice sunny weather and a good crowd. Jamie enjoyed it too but I took him off for a little wander just to make sure he didn't get bored.

They played all the songs you would have expected and some new stuff too, they did of course do Too Shy, their biggest hit and Never Ending Story from Limahl's solo catalogue. Great stuff.

Below Jez Strode.

Nick Beggs and Limahl.

After that we headed into deepest darkest Buckinghamshire, literally to collect some bits for the Friars site then we headed home and I did a little bit more course work. Well I have to press on now as everything has to be completed by 28th August.

Coton Manor Again - Saturday 22nd August

We headed out about 11.30 to pick Jamie and Mike's Mum up at the bus station, they had come over on the bus from Aylesbury. Jamie was non too happy as there had been a bit of T-shirt confusion and he hadn't been allowed to wear his beloved Metallica T-shirt! I was a bit miffed too, as we've had a long running thing with Jamie where we've told him that the person who owns Ryanair is the same one as Mike's cousin, and when we were all out for a meal one day in Cardiff, our Michael wrote a note for Jamie saying that every time he flew he could have Pringles to his hearts delight on 'his' Ryanair planes, this has been going on for over 3 years now, but Mike's Mum blew it for us all today too. (Aargh!!)

We were heading off to Coton Manor near Guilsborough, Northants. We suggested it to Mike's Mum as she likes gardens and I am becoming more and more into gardens these days (is it my age or is it my flower arranging?) Here is the link to the blog from Coton Manor earlier in the year when the bluebells were out http://www.blogcatalog.com/blog/sues-family-flowers-and-fun-stuff and a link to the Coton Manor website too http://www.cotonmanor.co.uk/.

There is a lot more to see than just the gardens and it makes for a very pleasant afternoon, especially if the sun is shining, as it did for us! Here are some of the flamingos, they are amazing, standing on one leg, and the colours were stunning.

Here's one of the ducks, I didn't see the one with the amazing blue beak today, but Jamie and Mike said they'd seen it, cute!

When we were walking through bluebell wood, Jamie almost stood on this little fella, a field mouse, it was tiny, easily less than 4 cms long without its tail, sadly the picture didn't come out too well, but you can see it's tail and ears. We stood and watched it for about 5 minutes we were fascinated, it must have been terrified of these huge things looking at it. It eventually ran off to who knows where, it was a privilege to see one of these tiny creatures. But the answer to Jamie remains no mice, rats, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits etc etc, between Binnie and Twinkle I wouldn't give them much of a chance!

Here's Jamie looking gorgeous with his long hair, more about his hair later.

This is the Meadow Border, sadly I can't give any specifics as to the flowers at the moment as I don't know or can't make them out clearly enough. This is something I am hoping to learn a lot more about over the coming months. But it was beautiful and I love the delicate shades of all the different colours, very restful planting.

I think this is the blue and yellow border, with the red border in the background, but don't quote me on it! Again beautiful plant combinations, I like to look at what nature throws together and what long planted gardens have together as it gives me ideas for colour schemes in flower arrangements.

Below is a Heuchera, possibly Palace Purple, I have fallen in love with this plant since seeing it at the last flower club demonstration and it comes in some amazing colours. I bought a couple in the nursery at Coton and think this plant may become a bit of an obsession. Just for a taster some of the varieties are called Berry Smoothie, Blackberry Jam, Creme Brulee, Chocolate Ruffles, Cascade Dawn and Georgia Peach to name but a few, I may do a whole blog about it in a couple of weeks time.

The weather was wonderful and after a super wander around, we headed off to the tea shop, Mike and Jamie went ahead and I took some photos as I wandered back who should I bump into but my wonderful flower arranging tutor Sylvia. Well it was hugs all round and Jamie said to Mike, "Daddy someone is hugging Mummy", Mike guessed it was Sylvia, so I grabbed Mike and introduced them as they have not met properly but have spoken on the phone, it was lovely for them to all meet properly. I adore Sylvia and she has passed on her passion for flower arranging to me too I consider myself very lucky to have had such a wonderful teacher as her and now enjoy her company at flower club and other events too. I am very much looking forward to the Advanced Course she is planning to run after Easter 2010. Anyway we had a good natter about flower club and about Thursday coming (more of that on Thursday) and she headed off with her friend to look around the garden.

I got my coffee and had a slice of coffee and walnut cake, which was lovely and then we had a wander in the nursery area, where I picked up a couple of Heuchera and a Sedum (a dark purple) all of which will provide some useful flower arranging leaves eventually when they are big enough to pick from!

We headed off back home and Mike did a super BBQ, Binnie was almost recovered but sorry for herself as we kept her off food, just gave her a bit of bread and plenty of water was available for her. Mike took his Mum home.

I had planned to do a little bit more college work but I'd noticed during the day that Jamie had been scratching at his head a lot, and I had been scratching at mine (I bet you can guess where this is going!) and I also had a rash all over the top of my back. So I sat Jamie down, with my reading glasses on and a bright light and yes, you've guessed it HEAD LICE!! and not only him, me too (aargh!). So I got him straight into the shower, got his hair washed and then caked it in conditioner. I then sat for about 1 hour combing and combing and combing it to try and get as many of the blighters out as I could. I have never seen them before so had no idea what to expect, but goodness me some of them were HUGE, about 2mm long at the biggest. So I managed to get tons out of Jamie's head, he was quite bad (yuck) and I am sure he was going to be a lot more comfortable, but we were going to have to wait until the next day before we could get some proper stuff!

I then caked my hair in conditioner and Mike combed mine, not easy as my hair is very long and very very thick, after Mike has finished I sat and combed mine for about 40 minutes or so as well. Jamie has been very lucky and got to 9 without a problem, even when many in his class have had repeated bouts of them including some of his close friends. I have always put that down to a special shampoo we have used with Tea Tree oil and Neem oil in, and I think as it has been the summer holidays we have been a little lackadaisical and not replaced them. Jamie was at Activity Land a couple of weeks ago and I suspect that may be where he caught them, I caught them off him as I am always holding my head next to his and as he has my thick hair too it is not surprise they walked aboard me too! So that put paid to any college work for tonight!

Radiazios

I did some work on my assignments today and managed to get one polished off (one about record keeping) and watched some cricket. Later on in the day Mike took Jamie over to his Mum's as Mike and I were going out with our friends Anne and Martin for a meal, which I was looking forward to very much. We were going to Rodizios Steakhouse, a newish restaurant in the Theatre District of Central MK.

I was certainly in the mood to celebrate so once we were seated the cocktails menu was a must. I headed straight for the raspberry daiquiri, Mike had a creamy concoction, Martin a Mojito and Anne I can't remember, must be because of the second daiquiri that followed my first.

Rodizio's is a Churrascaria (pron. Shoo-rah-scah-ree-ah) and that is a Brazilian Steakhouse which serves Rodizio. Rodizio is when you pay a fixed price and the meat waiter (lots of them young and handsome!) regularly brings around selections of barbecued meat (beef, steak, gammon, chicken, sausages in our case) and they slice it for you at your table with HUGE knives! You have a little sign on the table and you have it showing green if you want more meat or red if you are resting. There is also a huge selection of vegetables, salads, rice, lasagna, and some hot Brazilian vegetables and bean dishes in sauces. The salads, rice cakes, carrots and roast potatoes were superb and the meat was lovely, especially the gammon - maybe a tad too salty for some. I wasn't too keen on the sausages but I'm a bit picky about sausages.

We certainly enjoyed ourselves, perhaps my only criticism was the noise, it was very noisy - maybe on another night, not a weekend it may not be so noisy. I would certainly go again, and when we explained it to Jamie he is very keen to be able to go. Worth checking out, it is a different concept and you certainly can have plenty to eat. It is cheaper earlier in the week than weekends. We never even bothered to look at the desert menu, but managed a coffee each.

It was nice to see Martin and Anne, I need to organise for them to come to us, as we had a lovely Sunday Lunch with them a little while ago, but it can be difficult finding dates, as Mike and Martin are opposite each other shift wise, but I will start throwing some dates about soon.
I took a huge bone home for Binnie which was a mistake, as it turned her little tum over quite badly and she was not a well bunny the following day. After a little lie in, we came downstairs to an unmistakable, doggy has been unwell smell. No more bones for Binnie, she likes them, they don't like her. But she is fine and dandy again now!

PTLLS - Day 8

It's the final day of the course today, and the portfolio of work has to be handed in by Friday 28th August. This morning we covered the final bits we needed (inclusion and diversity and record keeping) and then worked on our portfolio's. We all went to lunch at McIntyre which was fun, we took over the place! I got some more assignments back today and all is well with them. So I added bits into the assignment which was referred and that has been remarked and is now fine - goodo. We all started heading away from about 2.30 with lots of hugs, everyone has been lovely - I am staying in touch and adding to Facebook too with as many from the course as possible.

I headed home and decided to watch a little bit of cricket for a little while and then assess what still needs finishing to complete my portfolio. I have 3 assignments (essay type), and 4 summary type assignments still to do, so that is going to keep me busy for a few days still! I've just got to keep the momentum going for a little bit longer.

PTLLS - Day 7 - My Micro-teach Today

So how did I get on in my Micro-teach well, perhaps even better than I was hoping for. It all went extremely well and everyone managed to make a button hole, and not only that they enjoyed making them and some of the guys wore them in their shirts and a couple of the girls put them in their hair! I got some brilliant feedback from my peer group and super feedback from the tutors. Some things I need to have a look at and work on, but heavens it was only the start!

I was very pushed for time, need to practice how to work with learners who struggle and need to relax and feel confident while demonstrating (I may look calm, I wasn't!) but I really enjoyed the whole experience.

So the question to be answered from the course is do I think teaching is for me, YES! I really really do, I have totally enjoyed the whole experience and feel as though I really have something to work towards now, and feel I have something I want to do now very much. This is just the very start, but I feel I have had all of my questions answered and now want to complete this first step as well as I can.

I missed out on a McIntyre lunch today, as I was setting up for my micro-teach but I will make up for it tomorrow. I cannot recommend too highly the McIntyre bakery and cafe on Stony Stratford High Street, their sandwiches and cakes are super and very very reasonably priced too, even when eating in.

It is the last day of the course tomorrow and that will seem a little strange as I have found it both challenging, rewarding and enjoyable and feel I have got just about everything I wanted to get out of the course, out of the course. I think one of two may have decided teaching isn't for them, too much form filling and paper work, but perhaps my local government background means that is very much the norm and I understand that part of the work. I still have a good bit of course work to do, but today means that 9 out of the 14 components for the portfolio are now complete and so far out of the ones I've had back I only have one which needs a bit more work for a pass. Pretty pleased so far.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

So as a little reward to myself I took Jamie to see Harry Potter finally, as I have been promising to take him since it opened. We enjoyed it very much, it is difficult not to enjoy Harry Potter really! It is surprising to see how they have all grown up now from the very first HP film, I was expecting what happened (no spoilers) but it was still a shock. Jamie knew too, so it was not a surprise to him either. It ended up being quite a late one, so I expect to be tired tomorrow.

PTLLS (Day 6)

Oh I am so tired! So not too much to say today. Day 6 of my PTLLS course and we had lots more micro-teaches today, mine is tomorrow and I am making sure I have got everything completed and ready for tomorrow. I have written my session (lesson) plan, got my handouts ready, made some sample button holes and gathered all the resources together that I need to take with me and there are a lot. So it's a big fingers crossed that all goes well.

Book Review - The Jesus Family Tomb Controversy: How the Evidence Falls Short by Dillon Burroughs

About 2 1/2 years ago I read the original book 'The Jesus Family Tomb' and found it interesting if not convincing but thought it may be interesting to read a critique of the work involved in that book so I found this one, which you can read online at the above link. Anyway for me this book was pushing on a door already open but this book takes you through the main arguments in the original book and examines how valid the evidence really is and offers alternative arguments where appropriate.

Are the names so significant (Mary, Joseph, even Jesus were all very common names 2000 years ago in The Holy Land, so the collection of these names found together really is not as significant as the original books makes out, roughly 1 in 4 women at that time was called Mary or some derivative of it); DNA evidence (the bones in the Jesus ossuary and the bones in the Mariamene ossuary have no DNA link fact - but you cannot then assume that those two people were married, nor that they were the Biblical Jesus and Mary Magdelene. The James Ossuary - is that really the missing Talpiot Tomb ossuary, well no as that missing one is well documented and described and it in no way matches the one known as The James Ossuary.

I found most of the arguments pretty convincing, but perhaps the basic fact that this tomb, collection of named ossuaries had been known about since 1980 and had not raised a flicker of interest especially amongst the relevant experts in biblical history, theology, and biblical archeology until the film director James Cameron became involved says an awful lot too. The BBC made a TV programme about this matter too several years ago and again that didn't raise much interest. Yes it is an interesting story and worthy of telling but it has to be even handed and I feel that reading both books has given me some of that balance.

Saying that, this is a readable book but not a riveting read, in the way the original book was a super and riveting read. But I have to agree with Dillon Burroughs in there are so many faults with the premises in the first book, what would be good would be to read a totally unbiased scientifically sound analysis of the whole issue. But if you are interested both books are worth a read.
Next for me is a Jackie Collins, I feel the need for some light relief.

Back on the PTLLS (Day 5)

Day 5 of my PTLLS Course today and it was lovely to see everyone again today. This week we started doing our micro-teaches and it is not as simple as making a presentation. They have to have a variety of activities and opportunities for 'the learners' (that is everyone in the group) to participate in an activity too. We had a quite a selection of topics and activities today, all of which were really interesting but most importantly provided a great learning opportunity. I did see the largest rabbit I have ever seen in my life and it was impressive. (You can find some pictures of the size of them if you follow this link http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.hoax-slayer.com/images/giant-rabbit2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.hoax-slayer.com/giant-rabbit.shtml&usg=__mkQmjHAH0jGapwFkC-RzZbBNBC0=&h=306&w=400&sz=14&hl=en&start=1&um=1&tbnid=pbgUILFNAWMAtM:&tbnh=95&tbnw=124&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dlarge%2Brabbit%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1T4GGLL_en-GBGB305GB306%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1

The hardest part of today was giving feedback, it is not an easy thing to do and I thought all 3 micro teaches today were very good, but it's also necessary to give more than just praise as very often in life we learn more from the mistakes we made, or thinking about how we could have done something better than we do if we get something right first time. It made me think about learning to drive and I learnt to drive so I could pass my test and then I learnt to drive so I could survive on the roads and I think I learnt more the first few times, I was in the car on my own than I did in all my lessons. I remember setting off and not putting my lights on once, in over 20 years plus driving I've rarely done it since!

I also got 3 assignments back today and two have passed at level 4 which pleases me lots (and lots and lots) and one has been Refer (which is modern speak for fail!), in reality there are a couple of things I need to add into the work (I've said what and why about something but not the how), so once I've done that I can resubmit and it should be fine and dandy.

Sunday 16th August

I am back on the PTLLS track today and doing some more work on my scheme of work, my plan for my pretend teaching course, and I have been enjoying it a lot, as I have put together a course for people to learn how to create their own wedding flowers. So I have spent a lot of time thinking about what I would want to teach on it if I was doing that course and then adding in all the teacher bits too, such as assessment etc. I also did a second run through of my teaching, which is now only, as we say in Jamie speak, 3 sleeps away, its on Wednesday. Other than getting the flowers (roses) and foliage (ivy) I have all the equipment I need ready and waiting, it arrived the other day. Along with some other bits the use for which I will let you into in a couple of weeks.

Here are a couple of photos of Mike and Jamie practising making button holes for my micro-teach practice. I think Mike is enjoying me in the role of teacher!! You can see they were taking it very seriously and can see the concentration on their faces, with that support, how can I fail!

They have done really well, here are their completed button holes and mine too! Well done MB & JD!!!! I may do a How to make a button hole in a couple of weeks.

Mike cooked an amazing Sunday roast today whilst I was busy with my work, and Jamie has been playing with K for a lot of the day. K was here for tea, I think it was the Yorkshire puddings, they had 4 each, that appealed, and even if I say so myself, as I made them, they were particularly delicious today! Jamie then went back round to K 's for a sleepover, so I bet he won't be asleep before midnight! We rang to say night night about 9pm and they were playing lego.

As Jamie wasn't here we decided to throw all caution to the wind and open a second bottle of wine!!! How bad is that (well not very really!!) Off to bed shortly as I have a long and busy week coming up, but looking forward to it very much. Better make sure I put more than one alarm on!!

Saturday 15th August - Some Really Old Photos

Mike has been given to access to a huge stack of photos from Friars days but they are all on slides, so he has been having a bit of a play around to see if he can convert them. As we have a ton of old slides from my childhood, he decided to practice on ours before he gets his hands on the other ones, get his system up and running so to speak. You know I'm from up north, but what I haven't really talked about, is that my Mum died when I was 14 so my memories of her are a bit patchy, especially as she was ill for much of the last couple of years of her life. Anyway some of the photos Mike played around with were taken in Norfolk in 1976 and when I saw what he had managed to do with them I was amazed and choked too, it was wonderful to see my Mum on the computer screen. I thought I would share some of these on here as I think they are wonderful.

This is my Mum in 1976 on a boat on the Norfolk broads, she would have been 52 when this picture was taken, it was a couple of years before she became ill.

This is Mum with her dog Sooty and me (my hair looks really ginger in that photo!) sat having tea outside the caravan (we had one of those that you pull behind the car) - we were staying in Cromer.

This is Mum, me and Sooty again, this time in Sheringham - Mike and I love Norfolk and always try to go to Sheringham if we are staying at Hunstanton, so that's a big coincidence.

This is how I remember my Mum with her overall on, busy around the house or garden, she never really stopped, maybe just to read the evening paper when it arrived around tea-time. She is stood outside our house in Marske, near Redcar. She was a cook by profession and oh my, she really could cook and bake - anything and everything perfectly.

Friday 14th August - Walking With Dinosaurs Live!

Not too much chat, we went to see Walking with Dinosaurs Live tonight at Birmingham NIA. It was brilliant, if a little short, but I guess that was to cater for the children. Lots of brilliant dinosaurs, a really interesting show. Will get Jamie to fill in the names of the dinos I don't know - he is, like every 9 year old, a dinosaur expert. If you haven't watched the TV series of Walking with Dinosaurs, Beasts etc get them from your local library they are so worth watching. Well here are my pictures, not the best I've taken, but the conditions were difficult.

The narrator - a cross between Indiana Jones and Paul Serrano (a paleontologist - he is worth checking out he is twc*).

The set was a fairly bare landscape to start with, just a few rocks in the centre of the arena. We weren't quite sure what to expect and then this chap turned up - this is a Plateosaurus, herbivore of the Triassic.

and another hatching

plants began to grow, and so did the dinosaurs here is Brachiosaurus from the Jurassic.
The plants just appeared out of nowhere, and then the trees,

this is one of my favourites the Stegosaurus,

and above is Big Al, the Allosaurus

Here are a pair of Torosaurus from the Cretaceous battling it out to be alpha male,

then came the scary Utahraptor (10 points if you can guess where he was first discovered!).

and by this point flowers were growing too, not sure how I'd use this one in an arrangement, might be a bit big!

Another of my favourites, Ankylosaurus

and then the one we had all been waiting for Tyrannosaurus Rex (and it was huge!)

and scary!!!!!!!
